Darkness is a Door

May you feel both courage and joy.

This body of work records my adjustment to a new philosophy of life. In 2015, mental and physical disabling conditions created a great deal of loss and confusion, but I could not be more grateful. The darkness I faced became a door to spiritual and emotional freedom. Everything changed significantly--I am now content and fulfilled on a daily basis and also managing chronic mental and physical pain.

The joy of making art returned when I remembered my true self and became brave enough to be her in front of everyone. This resulting show is a genuine miracle.

One day I painted black ink on my watercolors to make them true. Another day I scribbled words on my art because I wanted to. I taped up phrases from a magazine, “Use what you have” and “Look everywhere for inspiration.” I paint from my photographs of daily life, and use my art work as a way to express what matters.

I try to greet reality like an old friend. This true mix of darkness and light we all face offers understanding and deeper respect for our fellow travelers. This acceptance of reality as-it-is brings me near to the sustaining Pulse of Life.

These temporal watercolor drawings are shown unframed to honor my personal limits for constructing, lifting and storing framed works. May you enjoy them in the state you find them.

My deepest gratitude to the many people who selflessly support my life and recovery. To Charlie, Peggy, Wendy, Carol, and all my dear family and friends--thank you.

Thank you to ArtMix for your support of artists with disabilities.
